Study of the µ+ → e+γ decay with the MEG experiment at PSI: present and future

The results of the data collected by the MEG detector at the Paul Scherrer Institut during the three years of operation (2009-2011) in search for the lepton flavor violating decay µ+ → e+γ are presented. The design and expected performances of the MEG upgrade to be operated in the coming years are sketched.
