The present work describes the ongoing upgrade of the focal-plane detector system and the associated data acquisition system of the large-acceptance S800 magnetic spectrograph. It includes the development of an innovative micro-pattern gaseous detector readout for the tracking system, a novel energy-loss detector concept for Z-identification, and a high resolution optical readout for the timing scintillator detector. The upgraded focal-plane detector system will allow for improved particle identification for heavy-ion beams above Z=100, at higher rate capability (> 25 kHz).
