EPJ ST Special Issue: Soliton Dynamics in Complex Physical Systems: Theory and Applications

Solitons emerge from the delicate balance between dispersion and nonlinearity in physical systems and are observed in a wide array of fields, including fluid dynamics, optics, plasma physics, condensed matter physics, and biophysics, which exhibit a rich variety of behaviors, from simple particle-like interactions to more complex phenomena such as soliton fission and fusion, breather modes, rogue waves, and dark solitons. Despite extensive research, key challenges remain, including understanding soliton stability under perturbations, the dynamics of soliton interactions in complex media, and developing robust methods for controlling soliton behavior in practical applications. Recent advances in experimental techniques and computational methods have opened new avenues for studying soliton dynamics. For example, ultrafast laser spectroscopy and high-resolution imaging techniques have provided unprecedented insights into the behavior of solitons in real-time. Similarly, advanced numerical simulations have enabled researchers to model complex soliton interactions and predict their behavior under various conditions. However, there is still much to be explored, and interdisciplinary approaches combining soliton dynamics with fields such as machine learning, control theory, and quantum mechanics hold great promise for developing innovative solutions and technologies.

This special issue aims to gather cutting-edge research and reviews that explore the theoretical foundations and practical implications of soliton dynamics in diverse physical systems. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Theoretical Models and Mathematical Frameworks: Development and analysis of mathematical models that describe soliton dynamics, including integrable systems, inverse scattering methods, and perturbation theory.
  • Nonlinear Wave Phenomena: Studies of nonlinear wave interactions, stability, and bifurcations in soliton systems, with a focus on emerging phenomena such as rogue waves, dark solitons, and soliton turbulence.
  • Soliton Interactions and Collisions: Detailed investigations of soliton collisions, including the effects of external perturbations and boundary conditions on soliton behavior.
  • Experimental Observations and Simulations: Experimental results and numerical simulations that provide insights into soliton dynamics in real-world systems, such as optical fibers, Bose-Einstein condensates, and water waves.
  • Applications in Technology and Engineering: Practical applications of soliton dynamics in areas such as telecommunications, data transmission, energy harvesting, and material science.
  • Interdisciplinary Approaches: Cross-disciplinary studies that combine soliton dynamics with other fields, such as machine learning, control theory, and quantum mechanics, to develop innovative solutions and technologies.

We invite researchers and experts in the field to submit original and innovative contributions that advance the understanding of soliton dynamics and highlight their potential impact on science and technology. This special issue will serve as a platform for fostering collaboration and exchange of ideas among researchers working on different aspects of soliton dynamics.

Articles should be submitted to the Editorial Office of EPJ ST via the submission system, and should be clearly identified as intended for the topical issue “Soliton dynamics in complex physical systems: Theory and Applications”.

If the institution of the CORRESPONDING AUTHOR is part of such a Transformative Agreement, the Open Access fee will be covered by the agreement partner. All agreements are listed with more details under TRANSFORMATIVE Agreements. Eligibility will be automatically verified when the corresponding author is requested to complete the relevant affiliation information after acceptance of the paper during the production process. Corresponding authors not affiliated to institutes with Transformative Agreements are redirected to proceed with “Please select your publishing model” and have to decide between paying the current Open Access fee or choosing the subscription option without any publication charges.
